Abgal comes from Sumerian myth, these were half-fish half man. However one Abgal called Oannes was described as having two heads, the body of a fish and human feet. Abgal is the Akkadian name for them, Apkallu is the Sumerian name.
These Merfolk creatures helped civilize humanity by teaching the arts and sciences which they did during the day. Throughout the day they would fast as they came on to land to teach people. At night they would return to the waters to eat. Some believe that the Abgal are actually spirits and not Merfolk.
They derive from the earlier Apsu or Abzu as a part of the retinue of Enki or Ea the god of wisdom. It was said that there was seven of them who appeared one after the other. Their names and meanings of their names are:
- Uanna, (finished plans for heaven and earth)
- Uannedugga (blessed with intelligence)
- Enmedugga (with good fortune)
- Enmegalamma (born in a house
- Enmebulugga (grew up on pastured land)
- Utuabzu (went to heaven)
- The last is unknown.
