Aitvaras
- Mythical Number: #0084
- Culture:
Eastern European - Attribute:
Domestic - Behaviour:
Friendly and Dangerous
A helpful fortuitous creature from Lithuania. This animal takes the form of a black cockerel, cat or Dragon that secretly stalks a person home. Once there it then carries out tasks on the owners behalf. It will create wealth for the family, usually by stealing from neighbours but demands an omelette each day for its work. Eventually the Aitvaras will consume the souls of the whole family. One story tells of a woman inspected her neighbour’s barn to discover why his crops never decreased and always flourished. She took with her a holy candle and peering into the barn she saw a black cockerel spewing out endless grains. When the cockerel saw her it feared the sacred candle and vanished. A historical account was made in 1547 when a man was under investigation for unusual increase in wealth and was found to have sold his soul with the Aitvaras.

Interested in more Russian legend? A great cartoon called Dobrynya Nikitich and Zemy Gorynych (2006) is a Russian children's animation with Dragons and other Russian mythical beings. But for those who love Vampires, lets not forget that Eastern Europe is their birth place. No film quite gives the Vampire spooks like Nosferatu (1922). However if you like it modern, Day Watch and Night Watch are interesting Vampire alternatives. Also the fantasy tabletop game Warhammer features an army called Vampire Counts which has been greatly inspired by Eastern European beliefs and culture.
