Alvis was on of the great Dwarf smiths of Norse mythology. He is mostly known for forging the weapons for the Aesir gods including Mjolnir the powerful hammer of Thor.

For making the hammer, Alvis wanted to marry Thor's daughter. Alvis then went to see Thor to ask if Thor would promise such a reward for his great metal work. Thor disapproved but questioned Alvis continuously. Alvis, being so eager to marry Thor's most beautiful daughter kept answering questions. Eventually night turned to day at which point the suns rays turned Alvis to stone.
