Amphitrites is one of the Nereids, water nymphs of Greek mythology. Some say she is the wife of Poseidon and is generally considered the mother of the sea. She looks after all the fish, seals and dolphins. She is usually depicted as a beautiful woman with her hand in a pinching gesture. In mosaic art Amphitrites is sometimes shown riding the chariot of Poseidon which is pulled by the Hippocampi. On her brow sprout two horns in the form of a crab's claw.
In one story, Poseidon became fascinated with her and asked her for her hand in marriage after courting with her. Amphitrites moved away from his advances. She moved quite a distance, all the way to the end of the world where Atlas lived. The dolphin goddess, Delphin was sent to track her down. When Delphin found Amphitrites Delphin persuaded her to come back to Poseidon and marry, and so she did.
Sometimes the name Amphitrites is used to describe the Abgal or Apkallu, Merfolk sages of Mesopotamian and Sumerian myth.
