The underworld spirits of Algonquian myths. These spirits were ruled by bears. They killed Moqwaoi, wolf brother to the Great Hare, Manabusch by dragging him under a frozen lake to drown. Manabusch then went and killed the bear chieftains but the Anamagqkiu flooded the world in revenge. Manabusch escaped this by hiding up a tree which grew taller and taller.
