Barstukai are underworld creatures, similar to the Gnome and they originate from the beliefs of the ancient Prussians and Lithuanians. They are very small and only measure about one cubit in height. The singular form of Bastukai is Barstukas.

He is helps bring a good harvest to a designated family. He will become part of the family and live in the house doing many chores. In particular he would give the farmer special cheeses, beers butter and bread. Farmers would repay their Bastukas by offering them food. This food was left out on a table were the Bastukas would eat it at midnight.

The Bastukai were ruled by Puskaitis, the god from the elder bush that rewarded worshipers with grain. If the Barstukai did well in his chores then Puskaitis would bless him and the family providing an abundant harvest that year. The Barstukai lives mostly under elderberry bushes when he hasn't got a human home to live in.

But for those who love Vampires, lets not forget that Eastern Europe is their birth place. No film quite gives the Vampire spooks like Nosferatu (1922). However if you like it modern, Day Watch and Night Watch are interesting Vampire alternatives.
