An evil snake from Akkadian mythology. Bashmu is described as being a venomous horned viper with forelegs. The Bashmu was one of the eleven monsters born from the goddess Tiamat and Ansu. They were commanded by Qingu and fought in an epic battle against the Igigi champion Marduk before Tiamat was slain.

Marduk was the king of the gods in Babylon belief. He was associated with the sun god iconographically from the Assyrian period onwards as held up a sun disc and did his bidding.

Bashmu was eventually slain in the battle. A modern day Satanic cult called The Temple of Black Light contains a ritual for sorcerers to summon Bashmu and the other ten creatures in a sacrificial ritual of eleven black candles.

In the Suemrian language, Bashmu is known as Mushatur. Bashmu is the name of this beast in the Akkadian language.
