Cailleach Beare, whose name means ‘Hag of Beare’, is a blue face hag who is an emanation of winter. She creates winter with her staff by slamming it on the ground for the snow to start forming. Brighid another god then sends down the rain to melt the snows of which a snake emerges. People use the snake to determine how long the winter will continue. Originally there were seven sisters who would create winters and renew themselves in the waters of the mountain when Spring came. However over time they became non-virtuous and so they sacrificed themselves until only one was left. Cailleach Beare is similar to Baba Yaga.
