Dain - Stag
- Norse (culture)
- Celestial (attribute)
- Friendly (behaviour)
Dain is the name of one of four celestial stags that lived in the enchanted world of the Yggdrasil tree. The Yggdrasil tree grew good tasting leaves that were highly nutritious. The sacred stags gracefully and peacefully fed on these green leaves. They were able to reach the highest leaves by standing on their back legs. The antlers of Dain had magical properties; they produced sweet honey dews that fell onto earth furnishing all the waters and rivers. There is a poem about the four stags:
“Four harts there are,
that the highest twigs
Nibble with necks bent back;
Dain and Dvalin,
Duneyr and Dyrathror.”
Grimnismol by Snorri Sturluson, Gylfaginning
