This is one of the Turehu fairies of the legends of the Native New Zealanders. Her mother was the Hine-Pukohurangi fairy. Hine-Wai is the light rain fairy of the mountain tops. Hine-Pukohurangi once married a mortal man but their happy marriage did not last long. The husband cheated on her numerous times. When she found out she was stricken with grief and flew up to the sky never to see him again.
