This was one of the Giants that the gods Loki, Thor and Thjalfi encountered in their voyage to Utgardloki’s castle in the land of the Giants. To gain hospitality, the three gods were put into different contests. Loki was challenged into an eating contest against Logi while Thjalfi was put in a running contest against Hugi. Both gods were defeated by the Giants. Thor had to challenge a huge cat and Ellis, the mother of Utgardloki. He too was defeated. In the end the Giants revealed themselves to be unbeatable phenomena. Logi was ‘fire’, Hugi was ‘thought’ and Ellis was ‘old age’. The cat turned out to be the vast cosmic Midgard Serpent.
