These are sacred fish of which there are several stories of their importance in Greek legend. The Ichthyes were a pair of huge Syrian river fish. One story tells of how the fish came to rescue Eros and Aphrodite from the terrible monster Typhus. A variation of the story is that the goddesses turned themselves into the two Ichthyes to escape. Another story states that Aphrodite was born from the Ichthyes. They were considered helpful and important and so the gods threw them to the sky and turned them into he constellation of Pisces.
