These are a group of beings that are one of the Balam creatures of the Quiche people of Guatemala. His name means ‘Famous Name’ and the one of many creatures that guard the four cardinal directions. The four Balam were jaguar-men and the first creatures on earth created by the god Harukan from white and yellow maize after the world was flooded. The gods created a wife for him called Tzununiha. Her name means ‘Water of Sparrows’ Mahu-Catah was the third man to be created.

The other Balam were Balam-Agab, Balam-Quitze and Iquitos Balam.
