Oceanus was seen as a god and as one of the Titans of classical mythology of Greece and Rome. He had the horns of a bull and the tail of a serpent and carried serpents and fish in his hands. Originally, Oceanus was worshipped as a god who presided over the cosmic river that encircled the earth. This river was known as Okeanos. From this river, Ocenaus provided the earth with rivers, springs and rain clouds.
Oceanus was married to Tethys who was a nurse and she was responsible for distributing the water of the vast river to the earth.
Together they gave birth to the river gods known as Potamoi or Okeanides who were the Nymphs of springs and fountains.
Later Oceanus was worshipped as a god of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Some people once perceived these oceans as the all encircling river. Now redefined he was seen as a man with crab claws for horns and held a fish and an oar in his hands with Tethys seated beside him.
