Otus
- Mythical Number: #2549
- Culture:
Greek - Attribute:
Giant - Attribute:
Humanoid - Behaviour:
Friendly and Dangerous
This is one of two twin Giants known as Aloes. The other was called Ephialtes. They were born from Iphimedeia the wife of Aloes. Some say that Aloes was their true father although others account that it was Poseidon. When first born it was noticed that they grew at an alarming rate. Through childhood they grew nine inches each month and were 6ft by the time they were nine years old. They were known to be benign Giants who helped found cities. They also helped to rescue Iphimedeia when she was threatened. At one time they tried to overcome the Olympian gods and trapped Ares, the god of war in a bronze pot for over a year. Further, they heaped more rocks and land on top of Mount Olympus itself to bury the gods. There are three stories of how they were killed. One states that they were bound by serpent iron chains and lowered in to Tartarus; another tells how Apollo slew them. An interesting story states that the goddess Artemis disguised herself as a deer and taunted the Giants to chase her. They both ran towards each other to intercept the deer in-between but the deer vanished and they accidentally stabbed each other.
