Ri is a female creature with the body and head of a woman but with fish-like appendages. She is also described as having a head, arms, genitalia and torso of a human. The lower part of the body is legless and ends in a pair of lateral fins. She is known to the people of New Ireland in Papua New Guinea. She lives on the beaches and the mangroves signing a seductive tune.
Some Ri creatures are found caught in nets of fishermen. Some are found washed up dead on the beach. It is believed that some Ri are hunted and eaten by certain native tribes.
The Ri are one of the cryptzoological animals that scientists are investigating. They have ruled out the possibility of these creatures being dugongs or porpoises as these have already been identified by the natives. It has been reported that juveniles and male adults have also been washed up on sea.
