This was an indigenous man from New Zealand who became a Taniwha or fairy. Whilst sailing out on his waka (canoe), he dived into Lake Rotoma. He was never seen as a human again. Instead he had morphed into a large reptile that inhabited the lake. This reptile did not prey on others but caused problems by generating huge waves.
