His name means ‘The Great Spirit of the Mountain’ and is a polar bear spirit who haunts the Inuit people of the Labrador coast. He is the master of whales and seals. There are many stories of who he is. Some say he is a creator and his body is not made of anything. Others say that he was once a loving father who became embittered and twisted over the deaths of his children and turned into a spirit to prey on man. Another story says that there was a time when the caribou were hard to hunt because they were stronger and had excellent eyesight. The Torngarsoak had one of the caribou sew up the eyes of his own kind making the caribou easier to hunt.
