This is a type of Taniwha from the legends of the indigenous people of New Zealand. The Taniwha are fairy creatures that usually take the form of an animal or some natural phenomena. They help and protect people from harm. Tutara-Kauika was a whale of the oceans who accompanied the hero Takitimu in his voyage to the island Aotearoa. He is that leader of a vast army of whales.
