His name means ‘Big Weather Creature’ ‘Great Lion’. He is a Babylonian Demon that has the body of a man and the head of a lion with the ears of a donkey and bird’s feet. He wields two weapons, a dagger and a mace. He has a curly lion’s mane and a short skirt. He is known to protect against diseases and Demons and is frequently seen in houses. Ugallu features in the epic of the hero Marduk. Ugallu is one of the eleven beasts born from the Dragon goddess Tiamat and is killed by Marduk. Sorcerers call upon the powers of Tiamat to summon Ugallu and the other ten creatures in a sacrificial ritual of eleven black candles.
