Together with his brother Balios, Xanthos the horse draws Poseidon’s chariot across the sky. He was born from Podarge, one of the Harpies. The two of them came to draw the chariot of Achilles in the Trojan wars. Achilles blamed Xanthos and Balios for not saving the life of his brother Patroclus. Xanthos prophesised that Achilles would be slain by the gods. In the end this held true and Apollo guided the bow of Paris to shoot an arrow into Achilles’ heal. As a result Xanthos was made dumb by Erinyes so that there would be no more prophesies.
